Central Moravian Church Christmas Putz
The Christmas Putz is a retelling of the story of Christs birth through narration and music, while tiny lights illuminate each miniature scene. Putz is from the German word putzen meaning to decorate. The figures in Centrals Putz, many of them antiques of German origin, are displayed amidst live moss, driftwood and rocks. The building of a putz is unique to the Moravians and Bethlehems first settlers brought their figures with them when they settled here. In later years, families would visit each others homes to view the putzes. Centrals Putz was first opened in 1937. Visit the Star and Candle Shoppe filled with many unique hand-crafted gifts and special Moravian items.
Moravian Museum of Bethlehem
The 1741 Gemeinhaus, Bethlehem's oldest building and a National Historic Landmark houses a museum that tells the stories of the Moravian founders. Opening the herringbone-patterned doors of this five-story log structure, the largest 18th century log building in the United States, reveals a place which served as home, school church and workplace during the community's earliest days. The museum complex also includes the 1752 Apothecary, or drug store, and the 1758 Nain-Schober House, the only remaining 18th century residence for Christianized American Indians in eastern Pennsylvania.
