Along the way you will often see a variety of shore birds and other wildlife and of course our Colonial Spanish Mustangs! Learn the history and local lore discovering what makes this wild part of the Outer Banks unlike any other place on earth, interpreted by Corolla's most experienced guide service!

Timbuck II

Enjoy free time for shopping and dining at Timbuk II with over 60 exciting shops, restaurants and recreation overlooking the Currituck Sound on the Northern Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Bodie Island Lighthouse

The current Bodie Island Lighthouse was built in the model of the Cape Lookout Lighthouse, except for having an exposed granite base. Even this lighthouse had a difficult beginning. Soon after it began operation in 1872, a flock of geese flew against the light, breaking glass panes and damaging the lens. Today, the lighthouse is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The lighthouse itself is not open, but the old keeper's house is open as a visitor's center and museum.

Chiamacomico Lifesaving Station

With its two stations and five outbuildings, Chicamacomico (pronounced chik a ma COM i co) is the most complete site of remaining life-saving stations in North Carolina and one of the nation's most complete sites. This site is located on Hatteras Island in the village of Rodanthe on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Built and manned in 1874, Chicamacomico was the first United States Life-Saving Service station in North Carolina, dedicated to the sole purpose of rescuing lives in peril from the sea.

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, standing at 208 feet, is the tallest in the United States. The lighthouse is painted in black and white spirals, with a red base. Its light can be seen for 20 miles, warning ships of the submerged sand bars where so many ships have foundered.

Dune Ride at Jockey's Ridge State Park

Jockey's Ridge State Park Jockey's Ridge is the tallest active sand dune system in the Eastern United States, and the most striking of the remaining dunes on the Outer Banks. Shifting winds are constantly reshaping the dunes. Because the Ridge is always changing, it is often referred to as "The Living Dune." Enjoy an ATV Dune Ride to the top of the ridge to see views arcing from the ocean to Roanoke Sound.

Wright Brothers Memorial & Museum

The first successful sustained powered flights in a heavier-than-air machine were made here by Wilbur and Orville Wright on December 17, 1903. A 60-foot granite monument dedicated in 1932, is perched atop 90-foot tall Kill Devil Hill commemorating the achievement of these two visionaries from Dayton, Ohio.A visit should include touring the museum exhibits, touring the reconstructed camp buildings and first flight trail area, and a climb up Kill Devil Hill to view the memorial pylon.

Guided Tour of Whalehead

Take a step back in time when you visit Whalehead in Historic Corolla! Originally built in the 1920s, this magnificent residence has been restored to its original grandeur.

This stunning and immaculately maintained residence was once a military barracks locale, a boarding school, a rocket fuel testing site, and then, for a short time, a deserted residence.Located inside Currituck Heritage Park, the museum is situated on 39 acres of pristine waterfront property, and is located in the heart of Historic Corolla.

Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education

This educational facility is dedicated to exploring coastal North Carolina's wildlife, natural history and heritage. Part of the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education is located in Corolla, at beautiful Currituck Heritage Park, between Currituck Beach Lighthouse and Whalehead. The Center offers both indoor and outdoor attractions for visitors to enjoy.

The tour is self-guided and includes a 20-minute feature presentation, "Life by Water's Rhythms," screening daily in the auditorium. The documentary explores the role of Currituck Sound in the natural and cultural history of the region. Also visit the N.C. Wild Store offering nature-oriented merchandise, including books, posters, gifts, artwork and apparel.

Currituck Beach Lighthouse

On December 1, 1875 the beacon of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse filled the remaining "dark spot" on the North Carolina coast between the Cape Henry light to the north and Bodie Island to the south.  Twenty years ago, the Currituck Beach Lighthouse was in need of repair. The nonprofit Outer Banks Conservationists (OBC) was created to preserve the lighthouse when no one else was willing to step in and restore the national landmark. Since then, the OBC has spent more than two decades and nearly 1.5 million from private dollars restoring, maintaining and operating the lighthouse. The OBC opened the lighthouse to the public in 1991.
