Hildene, named from the Old English words "hil" (hill) and "dene" (valley with stream), reflects its stunning setting between the Taconic and Green Mountains, with the Battenkill River running through the valley below. Built as a summer home by Robert Lincoln, the only child of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln to reach adulthood, Hildene was completed at the turn of the 20th century. Robert first visited Manchester in 1864 to join his family at the Equinox Hotel, and returned decades later to build this grand estate on 392 acres, which he considered his ancestral home.
