Trip Highlights:

Thimble Island Cruise aboard The Sea Mist

Set sail on a scenic 45-minute cruise through the legendary Thimble Islands off the coast of Branford, Connecticut—first charted in 1614 by explorer Adrien Block. Once used for farming, quarrying granite, and even rumored to have hidden Captain Kidd’s treasure, these picturesque islands are filled with fascinating stories. Cruise aboard the Sea Mist, a comfortable 44-foot Carman boat with two spacious observation decks, large viewing windows, and heating for cooler days. The lower deck’s interior can be completely sheltered for inclement weather. Enjoy the fresh sea breeze and stunning views as Captains Mike, Justin, Bryan, and crew share tales of history, mystery, and maritime adventure.

Essex Steam Train & Riverboat Ride

Experience the nostalgia of coal-fired locomotives pulling lovingly restored railroad cars. Feel the excitement of "All Aboard" as the engineer checks the locomotive before the journey begins, transporting you back to the days with the hiss of steam, the blast of the whistle, and the rhythmic clickety-clack of the tracks. Travel northward from Essex Station through picturesque towns like Deep River and Chester, passing pristine meadows, scenic farms, a millpond with a waterfall, and several bridges spanning rivers and creeks. Along the Connecticut River near Deep River, witness the unspoiled beauty of Selden Neck State Park and secluded coves accessible only by boat. Marvel at the tidal wetlands of Pratt Cove and Chester Creek, rich with birdlife including Cormorants, ducks, swans, Greenland Geese, Blue Heron, Egrets, and Red-winged Blackbirds. The 12-mile round-trip ride takes about an hour, cruising at a leisurely top speed of 20 mph. Disembark at Deep River Station for the riverboat ride...Step aboard a riverboat for a relaxing and informative ride up the majestic Connecticut River, from Deep River to East Haddam. Learn about the river's rich history and natural wonders as you glide past coves, inlets, islets, and deep waters teeming with fish, fowl, and river vegetation. Keep an eye out for Bald Eagles, often spotted during certain seasons. Admire man-made marvels such as bridges, ferries, and riverside homes, with highlights including the historic Goodspeed Opera House and Gillette Castle.

Shore Line Trolley Museum & Trolley Ride

Discover fascinating exhibits on trolley history and technology, then step outside to board a beautifully restored historic trolley car for a scenic ride along the Branford Electric Railway, which is the oldest continuously operating suburban trolley line in the United States. It's a nostalgic trip through time that will leave a lasting impression! Experience the soothing sounds of steel on steel, inhale the refreshing scent of shoreline salt marsh, and catch glimpses of wildlife- like the majestic osprey. This leisurely adventure offers a peaceful escape from the modern hustle and bustle.

Accessibility:

  • Essex Steam Train: their antique train cars, nearly a century old, provide a nostalgic journey through time. Please note that there are four steps between the station platform and the train floor. Additionally, the doorway into the train car is less than 27 inches wide. Due to insurance regulations, railroad personnel are prevented from providing assistance. If a mobility device, such as a wheelchair, can be folded, it can be accommodated inside the train car.

  • Essex River Boat: access to the boat involves a single step up from ground level to the gangplank, and one step down into the boat itself.

  • Shore Line Trolley & Museum: their authentic historic trolley cars remain unmodified. Passengers should be prepared to climb 2-3 steps to board each car. For visitors with mobility disabilities who opt not to ride the trolley, their fully accessible Sprague Station building offers indoor exhibits, restrooms, and other facilities to enjoy.

  • Eyre has a select quantity of wheelchair accessible motorcoaches available; therefore, we suggest you contact a Travel Advisor to discuss any needs you may have before reserving your trip.
