Whittier has a varied and rich cultural history in addition to being breathtakingly beautiful. The Chugach Natives of Prince William Sound first used the Whittier area as part of their portage route for accessing the Turnagain Arm. Russians and Americans exploring the region also used this passage as did prospecting miners who quickly learned that the Whittier area was the quickest passage from the Sound to Cook Inlet and Interior regions. The current city abounds in historical significance, too. Whittier was established by the U.S. Army during World War II as the location was nestled amidst mountains and blanketed by thick cloud cover making discovery of the port city difficult. The Federal railroad to Portage Valley was completed in 1943 and was the primary debarkation point for cargo, troops, and dependents of the Alaska Command. The Port of Whittier was, and continues to be, an ice-free, deepwater port strategically located to Anchorage and Interior Alaska.
Expand your understanding of Alaska's first people. The Alaska Native Heritage Center is a gathering place that celebrates, perpetuates, and shares Alaska Native cultures. The Center seeks to share the rich heritage of Alaska's eleven cultural groups by drawing upon the wisdom of the elders and the lifeways of long ago, and by introducing visitors to Native traditions and customs of both the past and the present.
Your journey begins in the port town of Whittier where you will board your marine vessel for a scenic cruise through the Prince William Sound. Enjoy pristine waters as you look out for marine animals, glaciers, and towering mountains.
Nestled between the waterfront and mountains lies Valdez, Alaska's Little Switzerland. This activity center for Prince William Sound offers a scenic mix of tidewater glaciers, rainforests, and mountains.
Travel back to the time when traditional riverboats plied the waterways of Alaska's interior during the late 1800s. Cruise on the Chena River aboard a sternwheeler and experience the thrill of river travel.
