Hildene, the Lincoln Family Home

Hildene, named after the Old English words for "hill" and "valley with stream," perfectly captures its stunning location in Manchester, Vermont. Surrounded by the Taconic Mountains to the west, Green Mountains to the east, and the Battenkill River below, this historic estate was built in the early 20th century as a summer retreat by Robert Lincoln, the only son of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln to reach adulthood. Robert first visited Manchester in 1864 and returned decades later to establish Hildene as his ancestral home on 392 picturesque acres.

Take a journey into the general store of yesteryear at The Vermont Country Store. As purveyors of practical and hard-to-find products, they offer a wide selection of quality merchandise from around the block and around the world. Family-owned and operated, The Vermont Country Store carries on more than 100 years of Orton family tradition in shopkeeping.

 

von Trapp Family Lodge

The von Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe has been a cherished part of Vermont’s landscape for over half a century. In the 1940s, the von Trapp family, famous as the Trapp Family Singers, toured the United States before settling in Stowe on a farm with breathtaking mountain views that reminded them of their beloved Austria. During our visit, we’ll explore the family’s rich history with a stop at the cemetery (weather permitting), a tour of the lodge’s memorabilia-filled movie room, and a special viewing of "The Real Maria," offering an authentic glimpse into the life of Maria von Trapp.

 

Horse Drawn Sleigh Ride

Enjoy a magical horse-drawn sleigh ride through the beautiful countryside of Stowe, VT. This enchanting experience offers stunning views of Vermont's rolling hills and forests, creating unforgettable memories in a winter wonderland.

 

Cold Hollow Cider Mill

Cold Hollow Cider Mill, one of New England's premier producers of fresh apple cider, invites you to experience cider-making the old-fashioned way. Watch as their 1920s rack-and-cloth press transforms fresh apples into delicious cider, preserving the tradition of craftsmanship. While you're there, indulge in samples of their mouthwatering apple products, from cider to baked goods and other Vermont specialties.

 

Billings Farm and Museum

Explore this first-class working dairy farm sustained by the Billings and Rockefeller families for over a century, and get comfortable with its famous Jersey cows, sheep, draft horses and chickens through interactive activities and programs. The meticulously restored 1890 Farmhouse, engaging farm life exhibits, and state-of-the-art theater featuring Academy-Award nominee film, "A Place in the Land," showcase this model farm, a Woodstock landmark since 1871.

Dinner on day three is included in the Mozart Room at von Trapp Family Lodge

Situated on 2,500 acres in beautiful Stowe, Vermont, the von Trapp Family Lodge is a unique mountain resort featuring Austrian-inspired architecture and European-style accommodations. The Lodge offers stunning mountain views, old-world comforts, and impeccable service. The property features a restaurant/lounge, indoor pool and fitness room. Guest rooms are located in the Main Lodge and include a coffee maker, mini-fridge, and iron/board.

 

Day 4: Hampton Inn Chicopee/Springfield (Chicopee, MA)
